Character Development

Make Characters Original

The audience likes fresh characters that they can relate to. This doesn't just mean new faces, but brand new types. An example might be a cop who's happy, who's Not a burned out alcoholic with an angry Captain, telling him he's off the case, to turn in his badge, and take a vacation, etc. Nevertheless, the character will still have to be based on some sort of familiar reality. Think of your task as creating or sculpting; there are certain underpinnings and techniques that will need to be taken care of.

1. Research

Observe people most like your character. Take note of what they are like in real life, and what their jobs are really like.

2. Cliché

Stay away from the cliché. Don't make your character like one you've seen on TV, that means its already been over done. Experiment by making a list of typical traits for your character; go though the list and make all the traits opposite of how they started out. This will prompt your creative thinking. It's OK to be absurd, you're actually looking for a wilder type of inspiration.

3. Contrasting Characters

You can bring out and show how your character is different by contrasting her with another character. For instance, the Hero could be a tea-drinking, soft spoken, old hand who only eats organic health food, while her burned out much younger partner prefers chili-dogs, beer, confrontation, and smoking ciggies.

4. Casting The Heroine

Pick someone you know or are familiar with to play the part in your mind as you create dialog and action. Don't make it overly restrictive, like, "He has massive muscles and a bad Austrian accent; he says, 'I'll be bock.'"

Keep it general enough so that Brad Pitt can play the part after he flips out for your screenplay.
